Soft wood means pine, which is less expensive than hardwood but does not last as long. It does, however, appeal to birds who are not big chewers to begin with.
Hard wood is more expensive and USUALLY lasts longer than the soft wood pieces.
(Even harder is manzanita and ribbonwood. These woods are usually used for perches and play stands. When used as a toy part, it is best to use thin slices, and only for medium to large birds.)
We feel that it is important to provide wood-chewing birds with a variety of soft AND hard wood.
